RealCycler MENELI allows the detection of Neisseria meningitidis (meningococcus), Streptococcus pneumoniae (pneumococcus), and Listeria monocytogenes DNA in clinical samples. Neisseria meningitidis, Streptococcus pneumoniae, and Listeria monocytogenes are pathogenic bacteria that can cause meningitis. Neisseria meningitidis is a Gram-negative diplococcus that causes meningococcal meningitis and is characterized by its capsule. Streptococcus pneumoniae is a Gram-positive coccus with a capsule that causes pneumococcal meningitis. Listeria monocytogenes is a Gram-positive bacillus that causes meningitis in vulnerable individuals.
